Sign of the Week : Done

I hope you have all been enjoying the introduction (or review) of a new sign each week.  This week’s sign is “done”.  This sign can be really helpful for transitions.  At the end of a task (ex. playing with a toy), you can indicate that it is “all done” when it’s time to move on to something else.  When my daughter wants to do something, but it’s time to move along, I will often sign this to her and it really seems to lessen the melt downs.  I’m letting her know it’s time to finish in a way that she understands.  As a speech therapist, I also use this frequently during speech sessions when we finish one task and it is time to start another.  I almost always do it at the end of the session (and I simultaneously say, “all done speech”) and usually after 2-3 sessions of that the child is doing it too!

To make this sign, you bring your hands a few inches in front of you (palms facing toward you), then brush them away and out, so you then see the back of your hands (instead of your palms).

To watch a helpful video demonstration, head on over to ASL University.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great week!
