Sign of the Week: Open

Hello there!  This post is a day later than usual because yesterday I posted about some great feedback that I got as part of the S…Peachy Feedback Linky Party.  If you missed that post, check it out to see if you were the lucky winner of a free product from my TpT store!  Now, onto the sign of the week…

As you know, I’ve been trying to cover words that I think are most functional and helpful in getting a little one or a minimally verbal child to communicate.  This week is no exception!  The sign of the week this week is “open”.  Now, this sign can be a bit tricky because it can change depending on the context.  For my clients that are using signs to communicate basic wants and needs, I do not introduce the variations of this sign, but I stick with the general sign.  To do that, bring your hands (palms toward you) together about eye level and then rotate them out and away from you.  It’s like you are pretending your hands are doors and they are opening up.

Here is a great video from mysmarthands.com that show some of the different signs for “open”:

Thanks for stopping by for the sign of the week!
