Appy Monday!

I know, I know it’s Monday…. Hopefully you are one of the lucky ones on spring break this week and you’re enjoying this post in your pj’s with a cup of coffee.  This is my first “Appy Monday” post, so I feel the need to review what I’m going for here.  At least as I get this series up and running, I will only be reviewing apps that are less than $5.  I realize that most SLPs don’t want to spend tons of money on apps, so I’m not going to waste your time with expensive apps that you can’t afford.  Alright, with all that said, time for my first review.

Splingo’s Language Universe is an app I discovered quite some time ago, but it never gets old!  It is a spectacular way to work on listening skills.  You can modify the number of words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and prepositions) to adjust the level of difficulty to meet the needs of your student.

Verbal directions are provided and the student has to move the items to the described location.  For example, “put the dragon’s blue square in the box.”  What I really like is that if you touch the Splingo logo at the bottom of the page, the direction is repeated for the student.  This is really helpful for my kiddos with auditory processing issues.  Sometimes hearing a direction once is just not enough for them.  This is a nice and fun way of encouraging them to ask for a repetition.

In the picture below, you can see how the items are arranged on the screen.

Kids love being cheered on as they follow directions correctly and interact with the objects on the screen. When they get three answers in a row correct, they are able to add a piece to their rocket ship (which eventually blasts off into space). Fun, right?  You can get this app for less than the cost of a vanilla latte from Starbucks.  🙂  It’s only $2.99!
