In episode 8 of The Speech Space Podcast, I share some of my favorite tips for teaching the /s/ sound. We all know how tricky it can be when we are trying to teach a sound and our student is just not responding to the techniques we are trying. I hope that in today’s episode you can learn something new that you can use in your speech room!
Please feel free to reach out to me directly if you have any tips that you’d like to add or if you’d like to make a suggestion for a future podcast. I can be reached at: jessica@thedigitalslp.com. If you’ve found these episodes helpful in any way, I’d be ever so appreciative if you left a review on iTunes. By doing this, it makes it easier for other SLPs like you to find the show. Thank you for your support!
Coming up Next Week:
Please tune in next week, when I talk about using nature in speech therapy.
It was nice to hear you comment on the tongue down position. I have found that almost all of my student with a tongue thrust say their /S/ better with the tongue down position.
AND, let me add that I have enjoyed listening to your podcasts!!
Thanks for sharing your experience and taking the time to comment, Gloria! I’m so happy to hear that you’re liking the podcasts!
Hello. I came across this by chance, best suggested post ever! My son, 6, has speech apraxia. We struggle with many letter sounds. However he can make most when when “pushed”. (But then will not use them in conversation) However, no amount of practice or guiding will help him get out the /th\ sound combo. (Hard or soft.) How can I help him to make this sound? Poor kid will be starting grade one in the fall and he still struggles so badly with letter sounds that come so naturally to most.
Hi there! I’m not able to give specific advice over the internet, but I can say that the /th/ sound is often a tricky one! It is also a “later developing sound” and often isn’t mastered until age 7, so I wouldn’t be overly concerned at this point. I hope that your son is receiving services for his apraxia and that his speech therapist can help him with this sound!
I love the idea to use a slide as a visual! I think my students will really benefit from your tips! I always enjoy learning new strategies and getting new ideas to bring to my sessions. Thanks so much!
Thanks so much for your kind words, Megan! I hope that you enjoy using these strategies with your students!
