Sign of the Week: Hurt

Happy Monday, everyone!  I hope you all had a nice weekend and are taking time to enjoy the lovely fall weather!  The Sign of the Week this week is “hurt”.  This is another very functional sign.  If you’re teaching it during a speech therapy session, it might be a little tricky to teach quickly.  If you are teaching this to your little one at home (especially a toddler!), then you should find many of opportunities to reinforce the use of this sign.  For example, when my daughter falls and bumps her head, I say, “Are you hurt?” or “Did that hurt?”, while I simultaneously make the sign for hurt.  If she pulls my hair, I say, “Ouch! That hurt”, while making the sign.  If you are trying to teach this sign with a student, you might need to look for more opportunities to practice.  I am sure that a search for a few Youtube videos might have some scenarios that would help serve as a model.  You could also pretend to get hurt by stubbing your toe or running into a door- you just want to make sure you are being a very good actor to show that it “hurt” (since some kids might think running into things is funny).  Now, onto the sign itself!

To make this sign, you point your pointer fingers toward one another (palms facing toward you) and tap them together (thumbs are resting and not pointing upward).  Head on over to Baby Sign Language to view a video demo of this sign.  Thanks for stopping by and have a great week!
