Language Activities for St. Patrick’s Day

I’m always trying to think of fun and creative ways to get kids talking in the therapy room.  Since the holiday is right around the corner, I wanted to share some language activities for St. Patrick’s Day.  Here are some fun things that you can do in the classroom, during a speech therapy session, or at home too!

  • Cook with color!  If you have access to a kitchen, these ideas are sure to get your kids excited.  Mix a little green food coloring with milk and add cereal.  How about some green eggs & ham?  If you’d rather not use food coloring, you could always just use naturally green foods, like green apples, cucumbers, spinach, broccoli, etc.  Or even better, try a healthy (but delicious 🙂 green smoothie.  For any of these ideas, you can easily practice following and giving directions.  Easy, yet fun!
  • Wear something silly.  That always gets kids talking!  For example, I always seek those silly, green, sparkly heart glasses- those would be great!  Surprise your students when they walk in by wearing those and they’re sure to have something to say about it!
  • Talk about a time you were lucky/unlucky.  I find that talking about an unlucky experience can be very humbling, but also very funny.  Compare and contrast the feelings experienced in both situations.
  • Think of things that are green.  Take turns naming things that are green.  See who can name the most!
  • Describe items that are related to St. Patrick’s Day and have your student guess what you’re describing.  For example, for rainbow you could provide the clue, “I’m thinking of something that’s very colorful that you see in the sky after it rains.”  Then, switch turns and have your student describe something for you to guess.  Some other ideas might be a pot of gold, a leprechaun, or a shamrock.

And if you happen to be working on figurative language, I have a fun “St. Patrick’s Day Idioms” activity that you might also want to check out!

What ideas do you have planned for this week in therapy?  Do you have your green attire picked out yet?
